Wigan and Ashton Gym Club was founded in 1979 and spent the first 19 years of its life at Cansfield High School in Ashton in Makerfield.  It then moved to Abraham Guest Sports College for 6 years before finding a home in July 2004 at Market Street, Hindley.

During those years the Club has had numerous successes and has had gymnasts competing in local, county, regional and national competitions.  The club is registered with British Gymnastics Association, the North West Region and Lancashire County.

It has always been a club for Artistic (sometimes called ‘Olympic’) gymnastics and for most of its life has trained solely girls due to restriction with training areas and equipment, though it did have considerable success in the Men’s Artistic gymnastic field in its early years.

The Club has always been run on a voluntary basis – the coaches, judges, officials and helpers are not paid for the considerable amount of hours they dedicate to the sport, indeed it costs them money to travel to the training and competition venues, and also for the courses they attend.

In July 2004 we were successful in gaining GYM MARK accreditation – one of only 23 clubs in the Country and the first Artistic club in the North West Region at that time.  This is the official ‘seal of approval’ from the British Gymnastics that our practices and policies are correct and that our coaches and officials are qualified at the correct level and has attended the required courses and seminars.
